Fashion Fantasies
I have a fascination with fashion.
Not the scandals or the competitive aspects so much as the fantasy part of it. I love imagining my heroine and her friends (oh, who am I kidding, and me) wearing beautiful gowns as they descend a royal staircase, waltz in front of a hushed crowd in a glittering ballroom, or walk down that aisle to their happily ever after.
Researching the jewelry, gowns, and other clothes for my characters takes me off on many delightful tangents, looking for ideas while "oohing" and "ahhing" at the sumptuous fabrics, elegant embroidery, and fabulous designs. This is one area where I might just take a bit of poetic license, for example, if I want to create a dress in a color that might not have existed at the time.
And, to give readers a better picture of what's in my imagination, I often include descriptions in my narrative—like the one below from a work in progress. Enjoy!
“We were about to have champagne,” said Brock. “Will you join us?”
“Yes, of course,” said Mac as he ushered Sydney to the table.
“Make yourself useful then.” Brock thrust a chilled bottle and a linen towel at Mac. “I fear if we wait for the wine steward, we may expire from thirst. Sydney, may I take your wrap?”
Smiling her assent, Sydney turned to let Brock take her cape.
“What an absolutely stunning gown!” exclaimed Helen. “That shade of blue brings out the red in your hair and the cut is absolutely divine. You have excellent taste, Sydney, and your dressmaker is a genius!”
